The short answer

Crunches strengthen your abs, but they do not burn the fat on top of them. Fat does not come off from one spot because you work the muscle under it.

What the trial did

Vispute and colleagues randomised 24 healthy, sedentary adults (14 men, 10 women, aged 18 to 40) into a control group or an ab-exercise group. The exercise group did 7 abdominal exercises, 2 sets of 10 repetitions, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Everyone kept an isocaloric diet, meaning the same calories as before.

What happened

The ab group got better at curl-ups (47 repetitions on average against 32 for the control group). But there was no significant change in body weight, body fat percentage, abdominal fat, waist circumference or skinfold measurements. The authors concluded that six weeks of ab training alone was not enough to reduce abdominal fat.

Why

Fat is lost from the whole body when you use more energy than you take in, not from the muscle you just worked. Ab exercises are a small amount of activity, so on their own they do little for fat.

What the numbers say about effort

A short ab circuit is a small amount of activity. Next to it, Harvard Health lists about 240 to 336 calories (≈) for 30 minutes of running at 5 mph, depending on body weight. Burning fat across the body takes more total energy than ab sets can supply.

The benefits that are real

In the trial, the ab group did significantly more curl-ups at the end (47 against 32 for the control group). So crunches built muscular endurance. That helps posture and strength. It just does not show up as less fat over the abs.

A better plan for a flatter middle

  • Keep a small, steady calorie deficit for weeks. That is what moves fat.
  • Move your whole body: walking, running, cycling, lifting.
  • Track waist, photos and strength every two weeks, not daily.

What this study can and cannot tell us

The trial was small: 24 people, six weeks, and a diet kept at the same calories. A longer programme, a bigger sample, or one combined with a calorie deficit could behave differently. So read the result narrowly: in that time, ab training alone did not reduce abdominal fat. The National Strength and Conditioning Association's guidance on spot reduction reaches the same practical conclusion. None of this says ab exercises are useless. It says they are not a fat-loss method.

How to tell whether your waist is changing

Weigh yourself less and measure more. The study tracked waist circumference and skinfolds as well as weight, and you can do the same at home: a tape measure at the same spot, plus a photo in the same light, every two weeks. Fitness and fat change at different speeds. Your curl-up count can jump within weeks while your waist moves slowly, so judge each on its own timeline.

What to do instead

  • Keep a small calorie deficit over weeks. It is the main lever.
  • Lift weights and walk. These burn more than crunches.
  • Train your abs for strength and posture, not as a fat-loss tool.
  • Track waist, photos and strength every two weeks, not just the scale.

Quick answers

Can you lose fat from just one body part?

The trial found no change in abdominal fat from ab exercises alone. Fat loss comes from the whole body when you eat fewer calories than you use.

Are crunches useless?

No. They build abdominal strength and endurance. They just do not melt the fat over the abs by themselves.

What actually reduces belly fat?

The trial points away from ab exercises alone. Fat loss comes from the whole body when you use more energy than you take in over weeks.
